FTP Settings - WS_FTP
LE Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME
A Warning to
Users with FrontPage Extensions Installed.
Designers with FrontPage extensions installed on their websites SHOULD
NOT use FTP programs to upload their
websites. They should use the 'publish website' option in Microsoft
FrontPage.
Failure to do so could render their website unusable by overwriting files
that FrontPage requires to administer their website. If files are
accidentally overwritten, you will incur charges to re-install the
FrontPage extensions onto your website.
If you have used FrontPage.
If you have used FrontPage to design your website but do not have the
FrontPage Extensions installed, then there are certain directories that
you don't have to upload.
These are any directories beginning with the name '_vti_'. They are only
required if you have the extensions installed on your web space.
If you are in any doubt about how your web space is configured, please
contact support@commrich.net
Below are the settings for a shareware program called 'WS FTP LE'.
This program is free to single users and students and for corporate users
there is a small charge. More details and the program can be found at
their website at
www.ipswitch.com.
Session
Properties - General Tab (see picture
below)
'Profile Name'
This can be anything you like such as 'CommRich' as in the example below.
'Host Name/Address' This is your ftp account which was issued to
you when you signed up for the 'CommRich' programme.
'Host Type' Leave this on 'Automatic Detect'.
'User ID and Password' This is your ftp logon ID and password.
These were issued to you when you signed up for the 'CommRich' programme.
You may want to tick the 'Save Pwd' box. The program will then remember
your password the next time you use it.
'Account and Comment' These two boxes can be left blank.

Session
Properties - Advanced Tab (see picture
below)
'Remote Port'
Ensure this is set to Port 21.

When you have completed
all the above, click OK and you will be returned to the main ftp screen as
seen in the picture below.
On the main screen there are three transfer options; ASCII, Binary and
Auto. Make sure the 'Auto' option is checked. You will also notice
that the ASCII and/or Binary options remain checked as well. This is
normal to the ftp program and is nothing to worry about.

You are now ready to
transfer your website to the CommRich.Net server.
You will first have to connect to the Internet with your Dial Up. If you
haven't set up your Dial Up Networking yet,
click
here for instructions.
Once connected to the Internet, click on the 'Connect' button on the main
ftp screen. This will establish an ftp connection with the CommRich.Net
server. If there are any errors during the connection, these will scroll
up in the lower portion of the main window (see picture below). All errors
are shown in red.
If you have connected successfully the screen should look very similar to
the picture below.

To transfer the files
that make up your website, treat the ftp program like the Windows 95/98
Explorer program.
The left portion of the ftp screen (Local System) contains the contents of
your website directory on your own hard-drive. If not then double-click on
the green up-arrow to browse to the directory where your website files
reside.
The right portion of the ftp screen (Remote Site) contains the contents of
your website directory on the CommRich.Net server.
This consists of three directories; 'htdocs', 'logfiles' and
'private'. The 'htdocs' directory is where you should place
all your website files and directories. There
is also a directory called 'cgi-bin' - this is where you place any
scripts that you wish to use on your website.
The 'private' directory is for advanced users. Scripts running on
your site have access to this directory but the directory is not
accessible from the web. You should place any databases your site uses in
this directory. The 'logfiles' directory contains a text file of
the users who visit your site. Every time someone visits your site, the
system updates the current log file for your website. Your log files are
stored in this directory and you can download them and delete them as you
wish.
To start the transfer,
highlight the file or directory/folder in the left portion of the ftp
screen (Local System) that you wish to copy then press the appropriate
arrowed button in the middle of the screen.
If you have several files to transfer, hold down the 'Ctrl' key while
highlighting them. You can transfer entire directories as well using the
same method.
When you transfer your files over, remember to be in the 'htdocs'
directory on the right portion of the screen (Remote Site) and that any
files you copy will overwrite any with the same name on the web server.

When you have finished
transferring your files, click on the 'Close' button and exit the
program. Don't forget to end the Dialup Networking connection. WS FTP does
not automatically end the connection.
The next time you use the
FTP program, you will not have to enter all the settings again, as the
program automatically saves your settings. It will just be a matter of
connecting to the Internet with your dialup connection and then clicking
on the connect button in the FTP program.
